Your MOT expires exactly one year after the last successful test. For most cars, the first MOT is due on the third anniversary of first registration.

You can take the MOT up to one month (minus a day) before it expires and keep the same renewal date. For example:
Driving a car without a valid MOT is illegal, except to drive it directly to a pre-booked MOT test. The penalty is up to £1,000 and your insurance may be invalidated in an accident.
Cars first registered less than three years ago don’t need an MOT yet. You’ll need your first one on the third anniversary of registration.
